Mady Schutzman

Mady Schutzman is writer and theater artist.  She has published essays and creative non-fiction in several anthologies and journals including Black Clock, The Drama Review, Errant Bodies, and Theatre Topics.  She is author of The Real Thing: Hysteria, Performance, and Advertising (Wesleyan) and several books on the work of Brazilian theatre director and social activist Augusto Boal.  Her most recent book,  Behold the Elusive Night Parrot, explores meaningful forms of affection overlooked and devalued amidst the tyranny of romantic love in Western culture.  Schutzman is also a playwright (UPSET! --  a Brechtian comedy about the Los Angeles uprising) and filmmaker (Dear Comrade – an experimental documentary about alternative economies and communal living).   She is Faculty Emerita at California Institute of the Arts, where was taught in the MFA Creative Writing Program.  Schutzman presented the text “Radical Doubt” on a panel entitled Divination as Praxis at the &Now Festival at CalArts (2015).
