Media artist and writer Marilyn Freeman is known for her formally daring work on themes of queerness and social justice, as well as her genre-defying/defining work in the area of video essay. Her critical writing theorizing this emergent form has been featured in TriQuarterly, Blackbird, NinthLetter, Fourth Genre and elsewhere. Her book Chronos/Kairos: Art of the Time-Based Essay will be published by The 3rd Thing in early 2020. Freeman’s independent and public service films, as well as her expanding body of short contemplative films can be seen on PBS, in movie theaters, in spirituality centers, in galleries and at film festivals worldwide. In addition to numerous awards for her direction and screenwriting, Freeman is the recipient of two ArtistTrust Fellowships and an Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation Grant. She has served as faculty at The Evergreen State College and St. Martin’s University, and is co-founder of media arts studio, Wovie.
